However, just over one hundred years later, the nation was riven in two by a brutal civil war regarding the morality of slavery. The post-war settlement created longstanding problems for citizens of the U.S.; these issues are reflected in the fight for equality which starred figures such as Martin L.K. Jr. and Malcolm X.
