The History of China
Introduction
For more than two millennia, emperors, officials, and revolutionaries have sought to unify and govern one of the world’s most complex societies - China.
This collection traces that story from the First Emperor’s creation of a centralised state through centuries of imperial tradition, before turning to the upheavals of the twentieth century. It follows the collapse of the old system, the rise of modern nationalism, and China’s struggle during the Second World War, culminating in Mao’s revolutionary transformation and the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution.
